The Science of Imagination

If I told you details about a steakhouse I used to go to in mid-town Manhattan — like how upon walking through the door, you’re met with sounds of clanging silverware and dishes, and the smells of sautéed onions and sizzling steak and grilled swordfish, and the sights of crispy fresh salads flying by on waiters’ trays — you might start to actually salivate.

Why? Because human beings are very sensual creatures. This is why it is so important to use all your senses in imagining yourself already having achieved your goals long before they come to fruition. Breathe like you’re already making the money that you are poised to make. Walk down the street like someone who doesn’t owe anyone a dime. Head held high. Chest out. Shoulders back. Confident grin on your face.

Some quick scientific facts to explain why this is so important: Sports psychologist and Olympic coach Dr. Richard Suinn discovered that when he asked downhill skiers to visualize their competitions, their brain waves and even their muscles responded in exactly the same way as if these athletes were actually competing. Their autonomic nervous systems triggered the same responses, also. In another French Olympic study, it was proved that long-jumpers who visualized their events improved their jumping distances 45 percent of the time.

You can use goal setting the same way. Break down your plan into what you’ll have to do the first week, the second week, next month. Keep track of your progress. Be visual; always picture where you want to end up. This allows you to keep on your path even when you feel like giving up.

I can’t overstate the importance of going through your typical day as though you have already accomplished the goal you have set for yourself. Just as the famous Olympic trainer proved, our brains do not know the difference between something we experience in reality and something we vividly imagine, and the most effective way to convince your brain of anything is through your physiology. In other words, the way you carry your body.

A genius named Dr. Joe Dispenza made a lifelong study of this and wrote about it extensively in a book called Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself. In a nutshell, he explains that just trying to think positively isn’t enough because we have habitual patterns in our bodies that cause us to constantly have the same thoughts. The only way to truly change the way we perceive the world around us or what we choose to focus on is by changing how we use our bodies. Interesting stuff.
